The Romance Mode in The NeverEnding Story
In a faraway place there is magical dragon that is helping a small boy on a journey to save the kingdom. Bastain is the only one that can save to Emperor by giving her a new name. Does that sound like a dream that you’ve had when you were little? That’s what the little boy Bastain read about in NeverEnding Story by Michael Ende. It’s not only a story about fantasy but a story about romance.
If the story is a romance it has to have symbolism that fits the symbolism of romance. Spring is the first thing because the season of romance is spring. Next, the time of day, in this case is sunrise. That happens in the very beginning of the story when Bastain goes to school. Then there is the swamp of sadness. The mist is the thing that symbolizes romance. The other symbolism that the swamp has is the dew and the soft breeze. When Atreyu is riding on Falkor the luckdragon they’re surrounded by shooting stars; stars symbolizes romance. Those are the symbols from The NeverEnding Story.
Besides the symbolism, there is the plotline. The NeverEnding Story has the plotline of a romance. First, there is mild conflict. In this story the conflict is some mischief kids throw Bastain into the dumpster. Next, there is a good conflict. That’s when he wanders into the book store and found the book about Fantasia. That’s a good conflict because he has something to read so he can forget about all the things that he doesn’t want to worry about. Finally, there is life affirming. This happened when he saved Fantasia and found out that whenever he wanted to get away from all his troubles in the real world he could escape into his imagination. That is how the story follows the plotline of romance.
He’s the character that made the plotline fit. All the things he does fits the plotline, so he must be the main character. One of the characteristics that he has that is unique is his imagination. The reason the story is so interesting is Bastain’s imagination. Besides his imagination there are many other characteristics that make him a great character. There’s his toughness, imagination, and bravery. People might not agree that he’s tough but when he got thrown into the dumpster he didn’t sit there and cry, he got out and went to school. Bravery is the next one. It doesn’t seem that he would be the brave type, but when you think about it he was brave throughout the story. He stayed in the old, dusty attic after everybody left the school. When there was a windy thunderstorm, he didn’t run away he stayed and roughed it out. Those are the characteristics that Bastain has that make this story a great one.
The NeverEnding Story is a story that never ends, just like the song that never ends. That’s why it’s called the NeverEnding Story. Bastain is still fantasizing about it today. He’s still tough, brave, and has one of the biggest imaginations ever. Overall this is one of the best stories to read or wat ch. There is romance, fantasy, mystery and bullies.
